Meet Katharine, one of OCEARCH’s most iconic great white sharks. Tagged off Cape Cod in 2013 and named in honor of Katharine Lee Bates, the Cape Cod native who penned America the Beautiful, Katharine went on to travel over 38,315 miles during her 7+ years of tracking.
From the waters of Massachusetts to The Gulf and beyond, Katharine captured hearts around the world while helping scientists unlock critical insights into white shark migration, feeding, and ocean health.
Her legacy lives on as a symbol of shark conservation, ocean exploration, and the importance of protecting our planet’s apex predators.
